Typhoid fever, also known as enteric fever, is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella bacteria. It is transmitted from person to person and can be life-threatening. Common symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. The highest incidence of typhoid cases and outbreaks, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water and handwashing facilities, are observed in Africa and South Asia. In these highly endemic regions, typhoid poses a significant risk, especially to children. Fortunately, a vaccine for typhoid fever is available, and the disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics. Prompt medical attention is crucial upon the appearance of typhoid symptoms.
