Spasticity is a condition resulting from damage to the nerve pathways in the brain or spinal cord that control muscle movement. It can manifest in various neurological conditions such as spinal cord injuries, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy, stroke, brain or head trauma, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and hereditary spastic paraplegias. Metabolic disorders like adrenoleukodystrophy, phenylketonuria, and Krabbe disease can also contribute to its development. Affecting over 12 million people globally, spasticity is prevalent in approximately 80% of individuals with cerebral palsy and 80% of those with Multiple Sclerosis. Effective management of spasticity requires a multidisciplinary team approach, often involving exercise, physical therapy, medication, or surgical intervention when necessary.
