Pulmonary embolism is an acute and potentially life-threatening condition that develops as a result of the sudden blockage of the pulmonary arteries, which carry blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs, by a blood clot, air, or fat. This condition typically arises from a blood clot obstructing the vessels; less frequently, it can also occur due to an air or fat embolism.
