A specialist physician thoroughly assesses the patient, considering their physical condition and reported symptoms. To further evaluate the patient's condition, additional blood tests and imaging studies are conducted. If elevated PCT levels are suspected to indicate a bacterial infection, a culture test is performed to identify the specific pathogen. Once the bacterial strain is diagnosed, targeted antibiotic therapy is initiated. Furthermore, in cases involving abscesses, surgical interventions such as drainage may also be necessary. It is important to note that PCT levels can also rise due to non-infectious causes, such as thyroid tumors or certain chronic diseases. In such scenarios, further investigations are required to establish a differential diagnosis and determine the underlying cause.
