Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease affecting various organ systems and presents a wide range of symptoms. The most common symptoms include:
Respiratory System Symptoms:
* Chronic, productive cough
* Wheezing and shortness of breath
* Recurrent or severe respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchiectasis)
* Nasal congestion and accumulation of thick, sticky mucus in the sinuses
Digestive System Symptoms:
* Foul-smelling and greasy stools (steatorrhea)
* Intestinal obstruction in newborns or children (including meconium ileus)
* Failure to gain weight and developmental delay (growth faltering)
* Gas accumulation and abdominal bloating
* Gallstone formation
* Pancreatitis or development of diabetes due to pancreatic damage
Other Symptoms:
* Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
* Bleeding disorders due to vitamin K deficiency
These symptoms can appear with varying intensity and combinations in each patient.
