Keratoconus is a condition characterized by the progressive thinning and abnormal outward bulging (steepening) of the cornea, the transparent front layer of the eye responsible for focusing light and enabling vision. Allergic conjunctivitis, frequently observed in many keratoconus patients, and the associated habit of constant eye rubbing, are recognized as significant risk factors. Studies indicate that mechanical eye rubbing can induce temporary or permanent changes in corneal structure, potentially triggering or accelerating the progression of keratoconus.
