Testicular torsion is an acute medical emergency that occurs when a testicle twists around its own axis, causing the spermatic cord, which supplies blood to the testicle, to become twisted and its blood vessels to become obstructed. This condition blocks the blood flow to the testicle, leading to sudden and severe pain, swelling, and other symptoms.

Prompt diagnosis and emergency surgical intervention are vital, as prolonged interruption of blood flow can result in permanent damage or loss of testicular tissue.

Testicular torsion most commonly affects newborns and adolescent males but can occur at any age. Its incidence is approximately 1 in 4000 male children, and it typically affects a single testicle, predominantly the left side; however, it can rarely be bilateral.
