Diverticula typically form when weakened areas in the large intestine bulge outward due to increased pressure. This pressure within the bowel causes small pouches (diverticula) of various sizes to herniate through the colon wall. Diverticulitis, on the other hand, is the inflammation or infection of these diverticula; it usually develops when the wall of a diverticulum tears or is damaged, leading to inflammation in the affected part of the bowel. Several factors increase the risk of developing diverticulitis. These factors include: Advanced age, Obesity, Smoking, Sedentary lifestyle, A diet high in animal fats and low in fiber, Use of certain medications such as steroids and opioids.
