In the treatment of flatfoot, one or more surgical methods may be used concurrently, if deemed necessary by the physician. Surgical approaches may include: correction of congenital vertical talus, where the talus bone is abnormally positioned; surgical separation of fused bones (tarsal coalition) resulting from abnormal bone development in childhood that leads to flatfoot; removal of bone spurs developed due to flatfoot; reshaping the foot by cutting bones (osteotomy/column lengthening, calcaneal slide) and/or fusing joints (arthrodesis); surgical cleaning of swollen and diseased tendon sheaths (synovectomy); and contributing to the proper shaping of the foot by relocating a tendon (tendon transfer).
