Toxoplasmosis is an infectious disease caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite typically lives in the intestines of cats and is shed into the environment through their feces. Human infection primarily occurs through three main routes: direct or indirect contact with infected cat feces (e.g., when cleaning a litter box), consumption of raw or undercooked infected meat products, or ingestion of contaminated food items like unclean water and unwashed fruits and vegetables. Cats that hunt or consume raw meat are particularly more likely to carry and spread the parasite.
