Inguinal hernias are generally categorized under three main types: direct, indirect, and femoral hernias. In addition, less commonly encountered obturator hernias can also occur in the groin region.
Indirect inguinal hernias are the most common type in the general population and can be observed at any age. They have the potential to descend into the testicles (scrotum).
Direct inguinal hernias emerge directly from a weak point in the abdominal wall, and their incidence increases with age.
Femoral hernias are rarer compared to other types of inguinal hernias. They are more common in women and carry a higher risk of strangulation than other hernias.
