Degeneration occurring on the surfaces of the facet joints can lead to facet joint arthritis, commonly known as calcification or osteoarthritis. This condition, also referred to as facet joint syndrome, is a common cause of back pain. Age, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, traumatic events (such as traffic accidents, falls, or sports injuries), and repetitive movements that strain the spine are considered risk factors for the development of facet joint syndrome.
