Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues and cells. This leads to inflammation and damage in various organs and systems. SLE can affect many different tissues and organs, including the skin, joints, kidneys, gastrointestinal system, lungs, nervous system, mucous membranes, and blood vessels. The most typical skin manifestation of the disease is a butterfly-shaped rash (malar rash) appearing on the nose and cheeks, while lesions due to sun sensitivity, oral or nasal ulcers, and hair loss are also common findings.
