Heart valve prolapse is a condition most commonly observed in the mitral valve. In this condition, during the heart's contraction (systole), one or both leaflets of the mitral valve abnormally bulge or prolapse into the left atrium. This is a structural abnormality that can affect the normal, proper closing function of the valve leaflets.
