Colonoscopy Preparation Guide

Colonoscopy is an important medical procedure performed for the detailed examination of the intestines. Thorough bowel cleansing is crucial for the success of the procedure and accurate diagnosis. This guide outlines general preparation steps; however, please remember that all instructions must be followed according to your doctor's specific guidance.

1. Dietary Preparation:

General Principle: To facilitate colon cleansing by avoiding high-fiber foods that leave residue in the bowel.
Several Days Before Colonoscopy (Typically 3-5 Days):
Avoid high-fiber foods such as whole-grain products, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, fruits and vegetables with skins or seeds (e.g., tomatoes, cucumbers), peas, and beans.
Focus on a low-fiber diet. During this period, eggs, yogurt, cheese, white or red meat (excluding organ meats), and fish can be consumed.
One Day Before Colonoscopy:
Absolutely no solid food should be consumed.
Only clear liquids should be consumed. These include water, clear tea (without milk or cream), apple juice, white grape juice, clear broth, carbonated beverages, and colorless gelatin.
Avoid red, purple, or orange colored beverages (fruit juices, sports drinks) as they can be mistaken for blood in the bowel.
After Midnight on the Day Before Colonoscopy: Following your doctor's specific instructions, you should not consume anything by mouth (NPO - Nil per os) except for vital medications with a small sip of water.

2. Use of Medications for Bowel Cleansing:

Purpose: To ensure the complete emptying of the bowels.
Administration: Your doctor will determine the specific bowel cleansing medications (e.g., sodium phosphate, polyethylene glycol-containing preparations, laxatives) and their dosages for you. These medications usually begin to be taken one day before the colonoscopy, at the time specified by your doctor.
Completion Time: All preparation medications must be completed at least 4 hours before the scheduled colonoscopy procedure.
Alternative Methods: In some cases, additional methods such as enemas or bowel irrigation may also be used.

3. On the Day of the Procedure:

Food and Drink: Absolutely no solid or liquid food should be consumed before the procedure.
Smoking and Tobacco Products: Since sedation or anesthesia will be used, refrain from smoking and other tobacco products on the day of the procedure.

Strict adherence to these instructions is critical for a smooth and successful colonoscopy. If you have any questions or concerns, please consult your doctor.
