Except for patients with severe pectus excavatum causing significant reduction in respiratory function, there is no impediment to fulfilling military obligations. However, patients treated with Nuss procedure and bar placement will be fit for military service after bar removal. For patients with pectus excavatum and an implanted bar, military service is postponed until bar removal with two one-year deferrals granted after the initial enlistment decision. If the bar is still in place after two one-year deferrals, enlistment proceeds with a recommendation for bar removal after basic training. The general preference of the Turkish Armed Forces is to enlist after bar removal.
