Treatment for pulmonary embolism lasts for at least 6 months. Depending on the severity and intensity of the illness, part of this treatment may take place in the hospital. If the individual has a genetic predisposition (such as Protein C deficiency, Factor V Leiden, or antithrombin III deficiency), they may need to take blood thinners for life.
