Treatment involves immobilization and weight-bearing avoidance during the acute phase of the disease, followed by the use of appropriate footwear. Corticosteroid injections and immobilization may help alleviate acute painful flares of Freiberg's disease. PRP therapy is also being utilized. Long-term management of Freiberg's disease often involves metatarsal bars and low-heeled shoes to help reduce stress on the second metatarsal head and joint. However, surgery is indicated in moderate to severe Freiberg's disease.
