For patients diagnosed with prepatellar bursitis, the initial treatment approach generally involves conservative methods. These methods include rest, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), elevation of the leg, and the application of ice compresses. Most patients can achieve significant improvement with these initial treatments. However, if the swelling has become chronic, reached a significant size, or is accompanied by signs suggestive of infection such as redness and increased warmth, aspiration (drawing out) of the fluid within the bursa may be necessary. Following aspiration, supportive treatments such as rest, elastic bandaging, and ice compression can be applied. In cases of frequent recurrence or in older patients who do not respond to conservative treatments, surgical removal of the bursa may be considered as a treatment option.
