For obesity surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy, patient selection is primarily based on the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing the patient's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters.
Generally accepted BMI ranges are:
* 18-25: Normal weight
* 25-30: Overweight
* 30 and above: Obese
Not every patient diagnosed with obesity may be suitable for surgery. General eligibility criteria for sleeve gastrectomy and other bariatric surgical procedures are:
* Patients with a BMI of 40 or higher are candidates for surgery, even if they have no additional health issues.
* Patients with a BMI between 35-40 who have obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea are evaluated for surgery.
A special consideration applies to cases of uncontrolled diabetes. Patients whose diabetes cannot be controlled despite diet and all medical treatments may be deemed suitable for metabolic surgery, even if their BMI is between 30-35.
