Dysentery is a highly contagious intestinal infection primarily spread through the fecal-oral route. Transmission typically occurs when an infected person's unwashed hands, after using the toilet, contaminate surfaces (like door handles, buttons) or food and drinks. Others then become infected by touching these contaminated surfaces or consuming the contaminated food/drinks.
Key transmission methods include:
* Poor hand hygiene, especially after using the toilet.
* Consumption of contaminated water.
* Ingestion of improperly cleaned or contaminated food.
* Swimming in contaminated water bodies (lakes, pools).
* Direct person-to-person contact.
Additionally, some chemical substances can cause dysentery that is not due to microbial infection.
