In general surgery, the Hinchey Classification is widely used to determine the severity of diverticulitis:
* Stage 1a: Phlegmon (inflammatory mass)
* Stage 1b: Diverticulitis with pericolic or mesenteric abscess
* Stage 2: Diverticulitis with a confined pelvic abscess
* Stage 3: Diverticulitis with purulent peritonitis (not communicating with the bowel lumen)
* Stage 4: Diverticulitis with fecal peritonitis (communicating with the bowel lumen)
