Gallstones are a very common cause of pancreatitis. Gallstones formed in the gallbladder can migrate into the bile duct and obstruct it. This can obstruct the opening of the pancreatic duct into the small intestine. As a result, bile and pancreatic secretions cannot flow into the small intestine, causing pancreatitis and jaundice due to obstruction.
