A transferrin test is requested when a specialist physician suspects a disorder in iron metabolism following a physical and clinical examination of the patient. This test is usually evaluated alongside other iron parameters such as a complete blood count (hemogram), ferritin (iron storage level), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and transferrin saturation. Furthermore, it may be requested to monitor the effectiveness of ongoing iron treatments or to follow up on known iron-related disorders. The test results provide important information for diagnosing conditions like anemia, hemochromatosis, and for assessing the risk of cardiovascular mortality.
