The treatment for papilledema is determined by identifying and addressing its underlying cause. If a brain tumor is found to be the cause, a biopsy is typically the initial step in diagnosis. Treatment for brain tumors may involve laser therapy, radiation, or often requires surgical intervention. If papilledema is caused by severe high blood pressure, immediate hospital management is essential. For idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), treatment often involves medication to reduce excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by decreasing its production, thereby normalizing pressure within the central nervous system. Patients are also encouraged to pursue weight loss. Should medical treatment prove ineffective, surgical procedures may be required to drain excess CSF. As IIH is frequently a chronic condition with the potential for long-term vision damage, regular monitoring by an ophthalmologist is a crucial part of the treatment plan.
