Echocardiography in children is no different from that performed on adults. Echocardiograms for children are performed in rooms equipped with materials to engage their attention. The procedure is painless and involves no radiation. However, children's clothing should be easy to remove, so comfortable clothing is recommended. There is no need to worry about the colors on the echocardiogram screen; these colors simply indicate the direction of blood flow. The echocardiogram measures the size and thickness of the heart chambers and shows how the heart valves pump blood. It can detect structural abnormalities of the heart, the presence of fluid around the heart, the presence of masses in the heart, heart movement, valve shape, valve stenosis, and regurgitation.
