Anemia is diagnosed through a combination of clinical examination and a complete blood count (CBC). The CBC test (also known as a hemogram analysis) evaluates the hemoglobin levels in the blood. Anemia is diagnosed if these values fall below the normal range. Analysis of the hemogram also aids in classifying the type of anemia. Further diagnostic tests, such as peripheral blood smear, stool and urine samples, and ultrasound imaging of the spleen and kidneys, may be analyzed if deemed necessary to determine the underlying cause.
