Herpes, also known as cold sores, is a viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. This infection typically manifests as contagious blisters and inflamed sores around the mouth (lips, gums, inside the mouth) or in the genital areas. While there are eight different types of the Herpes Simplex virus, three types are most commonly encountered in clinical practice.
