Rectocele, commonly known as a 'bowel hernia,' is a condition medically referred to as 'posterior vaginal wall prolapse.' It occurs when the rectum, the final section of the large intestine, bulges or sags into the vagina. The muscles and ligaments of the pelvic floor are crucial for keeping the rectum and vagina in their correct positions. Over time, these supporting structures can weaken. As a result of this weakening, pelvic organs may shift, causing the rectum to push against the vaginal wall and create a bulge. Rectocele is a form of pelvic organ prolapse, a condition where organs descend due to a weakened pelvic floor.
