The treatment of shoulder arthritis varies according to the stage and severity of the disease. When diagnosed in the early stages, symptoms can be alleviated with home exercises aimed at strengthening the muscles around the shoulder, or with physiotherapy. In addition to these approaches, mild medication can also be considered. If symptomatic relief is not achieved despite conservative treatment methods, a radiological evaluation is performed to determine the degree of joint degeneration. In cases of advanced arthritis, surgical intervention, specifically prosthetic implantation, may be necessary. A total shoulder prosthesis is generally preferred when both surfaces of the shoulder joint are affected. In pure shoulder arthritis where the rotator cuff mechanism is intact, a classic total shoulder prosthesis is implanted, but if the rotator cuff is damaged, a reverse shoulder prosthesis may be more appropriate.
