Recurrent infections can lead to the development of scar tissue (scar pannus) on the inner surface of the eyelid. In the advanced stages of the disease, this scar tissue may heal improperly, causing the eyelid to turn inward (entropion). Entropion, in turn, causes the eyelashes to rub against the eye's surface (trichiasis) and damage the cornea. Prolonged trichiasis can lead to blurred vision and, if left untreated, to permanent corneal blindness.
