There is no definitive classification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) types in the scientific literature yet. However, autism can generally be considered in two main forms based on cognitive abilities: cases accompanied by intellectual disability and cases where cognitive abilities are normal or superior. These distinctions are commonly referred to as 'low-functioning autism' and 'high-functioning autism' in everyday language.
