In some cases of severe acute pancreatitis, necrosis (death) of pancreatic tissue occurs; this condition is known as necrotizing pancreatitis. Infection of the necrotic tissue can lead to serious complications and organ failure. In such a scenario, surgical intervention and antibiotic therapy may be necessary to control the infection and remove the necrotic tissue. Necrotizing pancreatitis is a serious condition carrying a high risk of morbidity and mortality.
