Endocarditis is the medical term for inflammation of the heart valves. While a healthy immune system can typically eliminate microbes entering the body, in individuals with pre-existing heart valve disease, these microbes can settle on the heart valves. This leads to a serious condition known as 'infective endocarditis,' which is an infection of the heart valves. A significant challenge with infective endocarditis is its high resistance to antibiotic treatment. Patients often present with non-specific symptoms such as fever of unknown origin and signs of systemic infection in the blood. Due to the varied and often ambiguous nature of these symptoms, diagnosing endocarditis can be challenging, frequently leading to delayed identification.
