Middle ear infection (otitis media) typically arises as a complication of viral or bacterial upper respiratory tract infections, such as colds, sore throats, or respiratory infections. These types of infections can lead to inflammation and fluid buildup in the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. Other factors contributing to the development of middle ear infections include Eustachian tube dysfunction, post-nasal drip, and age (especially in young children).
