Following a prostate biopsy, it is generally recommended to observe a rest period of approximately 6 hours.
You may experience some mild and temporary side effects:
* Pelvic Discomfort: Mild pain in the pelvic region, particularly around the rectum, is common.
* Blood in Urine (Hematuria): Traces of blood in your urine may be observed for up to 5 days.
* Blood in Semen (Hemospermia): Your semen may appear darker or reddish due to blood for up to 6 weeks after the biopsy.
* Rectal Bleeding: If a transrectal biopsy was performed, a small amount of rectal bleeding may occur 2 to 3 days post-procedure.
Risk of Infection: A potential, though uncommon, complication is a prostate infection (acute prostatitis). Symptoms include chills, shivering, and high fever. To minimize this risk, prophylactic antibiotic treatment is typically administered before the biopsy.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention: Please contact your hospital or healthcare provider without delay if you experience any of the following:
* Heavy or excessive bleeding
* Pain that progressively worsens
* Fever
* Inability to urinate for more than 8 hours
