A novel type of gastric balloon is now available that can be placed without the need for an endoscopic procedure. This innovative balloon is swallowed by the patient without general anesthesia or sedation, similar to swallowing a pill with an attached thin tether. Prior to the procedure, patients typically undergo a one-week course of gastric protective medication. In a seated position, the patient swallows the capsule-like balloon with the aid of a glass of water. Its correct placement in the stomach is then confirmed via X-ray imaging. Once proper placement is verified, the balloon is inflated to its desired volume by filling it with liquid through the attached catheter. The catheter is then gently detached and removed. A significant advantage of this balloon is that its removal also does not require an endoscopic procedure. Approximately 4-5 months after placement, the balloon spontaneously deflates and is naturally expelled through the digestive tract.
