A wide variety of diseases can occur in the esophagus, including esophageal tumors in the neck, intrathoracic esophagus, and lower esophageal sphincter; diverticula, also known as pouches, in the esophagus such as Zenker's diverticulum in the neck, midthoracic in the middle esophagus, and epiphrenic at the lower end; giant hernias, where more than one-third of the stomach is in the chest cavity; achalasia and motility disorders; esophageal spasm; esophageal strictures and burns; esophageal ruptures; and tracheoesophageal fistula.
