Patients who experience spontaneous, unprovoked seizures (cold seizures) on two or more occasions during a fever-free period are diagnosed with epilepsy. No further investigations are necessary for diagnosis. However, to plan treatment and select the appropriate medication, and to determine the cause of the seizure if deemed necessary by the physician, an electroencephalogram (EEG) may be performed, along with a brain computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. In certain specific cases (parental consanguinity, a family history of similar patients, the patient's unique appearance, and the presence of noteworthy findings on examination), special blood and urine tests may be required.
