Cholera bacteria are transmitted through feces. The disease is spread through the consumption of food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person. Fecal contamination of food and drink is necessary. Failure to properly wash one's hands after defecation will result in the contamination of food and drink touched by the infected person. Person-to-person transmission of cholera is not a concern if hand hygiene is practiced.
