Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast, often caused by milk buildup due to overproduction of milk in breastfeeding mothers. While more common in breastfeeding women, it can occur during late pregnancy, postpartum, or even outside of pregnancy.
Typically appearing within the first three months of breastfeeding, mastitis presents with symptoms such as breast pain, tenderness, soreness, redness, swelling, fever, and chills.
Although often caused by milk stasis due to overproduction in breastfeeding mothers, in some cases bacteria can also contribute to the development of mastitis.
Being an infectious disease, mastitis treatment usually involves antibiotics. However, pain relievers may be sufficient if the condition is mild.
