Colonic polyps can appear differently under a microscope. Besides polyp appearances resembling mushrooms, attached to the inner colon by a thin stalk, there are also sessile polyps with a broad base. There are also polyps that appear completely flat under the microscope. Common microscopic polyp appearances include:
