Plaques often show no symptoms. Those with a family history of atherosclerosis should have regular checkups after a certain age. If symptoms are present during routine heart examinations, definitive diagnosis can be made with electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography (ECHO), stress testing, and, for suspicious cases, interventional coronary angiography and cardiac CT angiography (known as virtual angiography).
