The specialist physician performs a physical examination of the patient and reviews their complaints. Additional blood tests and imaging studies are obtained in this situation. If the elevated PCT is due to a bacterial infection, a culture test is also performed. The type of bacteria is identified in the culture test, and antibiotic treatment is initiated. However, in some cases, such as abscesses, surgical methods may also be used for drainage. Thyroid tumors and chronic diseases can also cause elevated PCT. In these cases, additional tests are ordered to make a differential diagnosis.
