Oculoplasty, or oculoplastic surgery, is a term used to describe a variety of procedures involving the eyelids, brows, eyeball, tear ducts, and face. Also known as ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery, the specialty encompasses medically necessary interventions as well as cosmetic procedures, sometimes both. Oculoplasty, in essence, refers to a wide range of procedures, from correcting eyelid drooping to treating tear duct blockage, orbital trauma, and prosthetic fitting. These procedures can be used to rejuvenate or reconstruct the eye and its surrounding structures. One of the most common oculoplastic procedures is blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery. This procedure reduces the sagging appearance associated with aging by removing excess skin from the eyelids. Brow lifts can be added to this surgery. Most oculoplastic procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and are performed on people of all ages. Tumor removal around the eye is also within the scope of oculoplasty.
