Various infections, medications, chemicals, radiation, and certain diseases causing inflammation in different organs of the body can be counted among the causes of myocarditis in children. Some children recover completely, while others may develop serious heart failure. Viral infections, such as influenza, adenovirus, and rubella, can also cause myocarditis in children. Children over 2 years of age may show fewer symptoms. An infection contracted by the mother during pregnancy can be passed to the baby. Myocarditis can also be seen in these infants. Due to weak blood flow in the heart, the children's liver and kidneys may be damaged. While 10 to 20 percent of children recover, 80 percent may develop chronic heart disease. It is very important for these children to be monitored by a specialist cardiologist. These children may experience rhythm problems and heart failure in the future.
