While cleft lip primarily presents cosmetic, lip, and nasal challenges, the most significant issue associated with cleft palate is speech impairment. Immediately after birth, ensuring proper feeding is paramount. Throughout their development, individuals with clefts may experience delayed growth in their teeth, jaw, and facial bones, extending into adulthood. Even after successful initial repair of cleft lip and palate, children require continuous monitoring of their upper jaw bone and dental development during their growth period. Furthermore, corrective procedures such as orthognathic surgeries (jaw repositioning) and septorhinoplasty (nose surgery) are often necessary as complementary treatments later in life. When only a cleft lip or only a cleft palate is present, the associated challenges tend to be less complex. However, when both conditions occur together, the healing process and final outcomes may differ and sometimes present greater complexities.
