Root canal treated teeth lose their vitality, making them more susceptible to fracture. Therefore, during the treatment period, it is advisable to avoid consuming very hard foods and to minimize excessive use of the treated tooth. Antibiotics may be prescribed to address any existing infection, and pain relievers can be recommended for potential discomfort. Immediately after the procedure, refraining from eating or drinking until the local anesthetic wears off is crucial. Patients might experience some sensitivity for a day or two. Post-treatment care for a root canal-treated tooth generally follows the same guidelines as for a regular filling. With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth can be preserved for a lifetime. If a significant amount of tooth structure was lost during the root canal procedure, various restorative materials may be used to support the tooth, restore its function, and extend its longevity. For long-term oral health and to protect the treated tooth, it is essential to brush twice daily, and to regularly use interdental brushes and dental floss. To maintain optimal oral and dental health throughout life, regular dental check-ups are recommended: annually until the age of 6, and twice a year thereafter.
