The Non-Stress Test (NST) is a fetal well-being assessment test typically performed after the 32nd week of pregnancy. During this test, changes in the fetal heart rate in relation to fetal movements and uterine contractions are monitored for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. NST provides valuable information for evaluating the overall health and oxygenation of the baby in the womb. Situations where the fetus experiences stress, known as fetal distress, due to maternal or fetal factors (e.g., inadequate nutrition, placental blood flow issues, decreased amniotic fluid volume) may require prompt medical intervention. In such critical circumstances, the identification of fetal distress assigns a significant role to NST in making vital decisions regarding whether the baby should remain in the womb or if early delivery is more appropriate.
