Kleptomania, also known colloquially as 'the stealing disease', is a recurrent psychological disorder where an individual struggles to resist the impulse to steal items that have no material value or are not needed for personal use. This disorder typically begins in adolescence, can continue into late adulthood, and may persist throughout life in some individuals. Due to its rarity, the associated social stigma, and hesitation in seeking treatment, the exact prevalence of kleptomania in the general population cannot be precisely determined. Research indicates that between 3.8% and 10% of individuals who engage in stealing exhibit symptoms of kleptomania.
